    As we all know, the booming tourist industry has played a positive role in meeting the cuhur- al needs of the public, introducing the country to foreigners, showcasing the brilliant history and culture to the outside world, which in turn has spurred the development of transportation, building and telecommunications industries, plus the development of the catering, recreational and souvenir trade, and has given birth to many new industrial sectors, which provide more job openings and generate income and tax revenues. However, the negative effect of tourism on our society, especially on our environment can’t be ignored. For example, tourism may cause serious environmental pollution and destroy many beautiful scenic spots. It may also break the ecological balance and lead to the extinction of some species because too much tourism may destroy the natural habitats of wildlife and too much tourists flooding the tourist attractions pose potential risks to the preservation of cultural relics.
    Given the circumstances above, tourism pundits warn that we must attach great importance to the near-term and long-term harm to the environment done by the development of tourism. They advocate ecotourism, i.e. sustainable tourism--responsible travel to natural areas, that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people and speculate that there will be an ecotourism boom around the world whose theme is to go to nature reserve and go back to nature.
    In order to encourage preservation, conservation and sustainability of natural and cultural re- sources and minimize the negative impact on the environment, our government has made some guidelines for eeotourism and taken some measures to achieve its goals. First, the government should provide direct financial support and benefits for conservation.  Second, the government should make effort to conserve biological and cultural diversity by strengthening protected area management systems and increasing the value of sound ecosystems.  Finally, the government
should promote the sustainable use of biodiversity by generating income, jobs and business opportunities in eeotourism and related business networks.
    As a citizen, everyone should take a part and contribute actively to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage.  We should build environmental and cultural awareness and respect. Tourism planners and tourists alike are learning to beware of mass and unplanned tourism and strive for sustainable tourism development, because well-planned and managed ecotourism has proved to be one of the most effective tools for long-term conservation, sustainability and diversity. Only in this way can we achieve the sustainable development of ecotourism while carrying for- ward our national culture.
