Where you live now
I live in Paris, the capital of France.
Although I like Paris very much, I don’t really like the area where I live. I suppose the two good things about it are the restaurants and the transport. There are many immigrants in the area here I live, so there’s a great variety of delicious food. The transport is good because there are two metro—under-ground—stations nearby.
It’s a poor area. That means that it’s cheap to live there—rents are low. However, there is a lot of petty crime and there are few health and sports facilities.
I doubt it. When I finish my studies, I hope to get a job and move to a better area.
Weddings
There is a wedding ceremony—either at a registry office or in a church—then a party. Wedding ceremonies in churches are becoming less common as fewer people take religion seriously. At the party—also called the reception—people make toasts to the bride and groom and a few people make speeches. Sometimes the speeches are very long and boring. There’s usually some live music and people dance. Of course, there is a lot of food and drink, just like at weddings all over the world, I imagine!
I don’t think that there is any special food that is eaten. Oh, how could I forget! There must be a wedding cake! Apart from that, there is usually a big selection of food. Most receptions nowadays have a buffet, so people can choose which food they want and how much of it they want to eat.
In my country, people generally buy small household items, such as dishes, cutlery, food mixers, that kind of thing. Most people buy something of practical use rather than something ornamental.
The men usually wear dark suits, though I have seen weddings where the men have been wearing white ones. The ladies wear dresses—usually quite fancy ones. The bride wears a white wedding dress to the ceremony, but generally changes into something more comfortable for the reception.
Yes, they do—but not always. Many couples find that they don’t have enough money for a real honey-moon, so they visit friends or family instead. The most popular places for a honeymoon are the south coast or, if the couple are wealthy, a trip to somewhere exotic, like Thailand, South America or Australia.
Games
Yes, we often play board games, like Monopoly and Risk. I like them, but I’m not a good player. My sister is very good at Risk, which is strange because it is a military strategy game. My mother is good at Monopoly. I think she is good at getting good deals out of people using her charm!
My favourite is Monopoly. It’s all about getting as much money as possible from other players by buying property and building on it. Everyone is a big capitalist—or at least they want to be! It’s an internationally famous game, with different versions for different cities around the world. I even saw a Bangkok version when I visited Thailand last year.
They’re not very popular. Young people seem to prefer computer games to board games. Actually, many computer games are based on board games. Board games can take a few hours to play, so many people are put off by that.
My sister prefers Risk and my mother prefers Monopoly—because those are the games they usually win at. So, my father and I usually decide what we will play. My mother has recently started playing Bridge, the card game, with some neighbours. Apparently, she’s pretty good at that too! My sister and I sometimes play computer games, but not often.
