Houses and cars are the big status symbols and some people will spend almost all their money on them, just to look more important than they actually are, The fact that cars are such an important status symbol has helped to create traffic problems in most big cities. Computers are status symbols, even though most people in cities can buy them. I think they show that a person is up-to-date with the latest technology. The latest mobile phones are often considered extremely cool, so people will sometimes buy one, then discard it only a year later for a newer, cooler model. I sometimes wonder if that is how some people treat their boyfriends and girlfriends!
