答案 In most countries, maternity leave is granted to new mothers during the months immediately before and after childbirth. Such a temporary period of absence from employment, I believe, is more positive than negative.
First, maternity leave supports the mother’s full recovery from childbirth. As is commonly known, expectant mothers may experience various pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, unruly hormones that cause depression, and swollen feet. It is not surprising to hear that some new mothers suffer depression and discomfort after giving birth to a baby. Therefore, having a period of several months to relax is beneficial to the mothers both physically and mentally.
Another argument in my favour is that maternity leave substantially increases child care which profoundly impacts the health of the child. Maternal care is especially crucial during the first few months following childbirth and non-employed mothers obviously have more time to take care of their baby. They become attuned and more effectively respond to their child’s health needs. Studies show that an additional week of maternity leave reduces infant mortality rates.
Opponents to maternity leave may argue that it imposes huge cost on corporations where the mothers work, since employers must continue paying salaries and health insurance during the leave, and hire new employees to replace labour productivity. And many of these extra costs are ultimately passed on to female employees in form of lower pay and fewer chances to ascend the corporate ladder. However, that is a small price to pay compared with the positive impacts of maternity leave on the child’s growth.
In conclusion, I am in favour of maternity leave since it allows mothers to improve their health condition and to allocate substantially more time towards the development of their child.
