    Traditionally, most elderly people lived with their children, grandchildren and even grand grandchildren if possible. However, with the social development, more senior citizens live only with their spouses or live alone nowadays. These old people are referred to as "the old in the empty nest".
    There are mainly two reasons for this phenomenon. On one hand, due to the fierce competition in the job market, millions of young people have to pursue their careers in another area or city far away from their parents. On the other hand, with the improvement in economy and housing conditions, it is possible for a family to own more than one apartment. Together, the two factors change people’s former lifestyles and make the empty nest possible.
    Elderly people in the empty nest are more likely to feel lonely and depressed than those who live with their children. To alter this situation, joint efforts should be made. The young should try to spare time and visit their parents regularly. What’s more important is that the senior citizens should cultivate their own hobbies, join in various activities and turn their focus from their children to their own life, which will help fight with the loneliness.
