答案                 Opinion about Regulating Filial Piety
Recently, the Chinese government stipulated new standards to ensure filial piety of the young people. Although the government did this out of good will, a lot of people cast doubt upon the forceful way to pull the young men back home. As far as I’m concerned, filial piety should be advocated rather than be regulated.
First of all, let’s see the regulation from the professional perspective. In legal adjudication, everything should be based on solid facts, especially on reason. If someone is held guilty of not fulfilling his or her filial obligations, then what is the quantitative standard? Is that visiting parents twice a week, once a week, or once a month? Even if it is said to be once a week by law, then again what is the standard? Why should it be once a week instead of twice a week? Thus it is obvious that the regulation of filial piety has a lamed leg to stand on from the adjudicative view.
Besides, filial piety is something that should be inspired by human nature rather than be forced by law. It is widely believed that human beings are born to be kind. That’s why most people would frown eyes upon someone leaving parents homeless and uncared, why so many people would donate food, clothes or even money to the homeless elderly, and why a large number of people would be touched by someone taking care of an old man who has no biological connection with him. Therefore, the point is that in order to boost filial piety, the government should attach importance to advocating it to the public by circulating non-commercial advertisement, reporting stories about filial piety or setting up foundations to reward filial models.
What’s more, filial piety should be expressed with sincerity. Under the pressure of the law, it is difficult to tell whether the young men take care of their parents out of their own will or just to avert punishment by law. If it is the latter, then it amounts to wearing a mask and lying to parents, which may hurt them more than leaving them alone. What the society hopes to see is a generation of young people who pay filial piety to parents from the bottom of their heart, not a bundle of actors and actresses who pretend to love parents but in fact ignore them.
All in all, whether it is analyzed from the adjudicative perspective, or seen through human nature, or even discussed from the angle of sincerity, filial piety had better be advocated in a humane manner rather than be enforced by ruthless law.
