Several years ago, people were often a little surprised when they heard that a student lodges off-campus. "Why? Maybe he can not live in college dormitories, "they thought. Nowadays, it is not an uncommon occurrence that college students live offcampus. Why do many students prefer lodging outside school?
According to my own observation as a college student, I find, in first two years, most of college students live on campus, while some juniors and seniors like to live outside schools. Especially, for those students who prepare for National Entrance Examination for Postgraduate, they find it’s more efficient to arrange their sleeping and study time than living in college dormitories. For those students who were doing a part-time job, it’s more convenient to arrange their job as well as their study life than living on-campus. Moreover, students living in an apartment in the community can live like being at home, making breakfast and dinner, and inviting friends over for party. They also can fully enjoy privacy as well as open themselves to the society.
However, just as every coin has two sides, lodging outside school has disadvantages. First, being away from campus, students lodging outside are not close to classroom and school facilities. They need spend time getting to class, to the library or to the gym. Next, living outside college, students have fewer opportunities to contact with their schoolmates. Generally, living at college, students eat at a dinning table shared with other students in the dinning hall; they study at a big desk surrounded by other students in the library, and they play sports in the field with their own teammates against other teammates. As a result, students living in college housing naturally know more people and make more friends at school. But these advantages usually cannot be shared by students living outside school. Besides, students living off-campus cannot focus their attention exclusively on school events and school activities; therefore, they have fewer opportunities for becoming involved in campus activities. Finally, being away from college, students are also away from college administration. In short, concerned about students’ study and safety, most of their teachers and parents hold that students live on-campus.
Taking into account all these factors, we may reasonably come to the conclusion that a combination of two years on-campus and two years off-campus is a winning combination for the students who want to live outside for convenience. In this way, they can keep contact both with the university and with society.
