The Philippine Coast Guard says 900 people have been saved from a ferry that sank off the country’s southern coast. Maritime officials say 5 people are confirmed dead and more than 60 others are missing, but authorities managed to transfer most of the passengers and crew from the Super Ferry 9 to other vessels before the ship went down today. Authorities say the ferry began tilting before dawn off Siocon Bay in Zamboanga del Norte Province. The captain ordered passengers and crew to abandon the ship before it sank.
