Step 1:Warming-up
1.Greetings.
2.Sing a song called Auld Lang Syne and ask students a question“when can we hear this song?”.The song goes like this:

And auld lany syne.
Invite students to answer the question.Then tell them most western countries will sing it to celebrate New Year,especially in Scotland and lead into the topic naturally.
Step 2:Pre-reading
1.Ask“what do you know about the Lantern Festival”.Students may share different answers such as the date and activities to celebrate.
2.Let students predict the main idea of the whole passage according to the title.
Step 3:While-reading
1.Global reading
Read the passage for students and ask them to find the main idea.Then invite one student to answer.
2.Detailed reading
Read the passage again and answer“What are the two stories?”and“What are most lanterns made with...?”Then students will be invited to answer.
Then students need to observe the underlined part to notice the tense.Then lead students to finish the mind map and write two sentences with different tense on the blackboard.Tell students that when we talk about something happened in the past,the simple tense should be used and we should change“am/is”.into“was”and“are”into“were”.
3.Ask students to read after the tape and pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation.
Step 4:Post-reading
Students need to work in groups of 4 to think of a festival,at home or abroad,they know well and introduce its origin.8 minutes are given and then invite some groups to share.
Step 5:Summary and Homework
Summary:invite a student to be a little teacher and summarize today’s lesson.
Homework:ask students to make lanterns collectively in the same group and show them next class.
