Language is one of the major difficulties when you’ re making your home in a new country. I’ m quite good at learning them so this isn’ t usually too hard for me. China was different, though. I’ d learnt some spoken Chinese before I came but I hadn’ t tried to learn to write, so I was pretty nervous about a country where I couldn’ t read anything. This was a real barrier because I couldn’t read restaurant menus, the destinations on buses, or even road signs. After ten years, I have made much progress — but not without plenty of work. I hope this course will help you to make a confident start and that you, like me, will get out there and enjoy this amazing country.
