In an age of rapid change, competition can be the vehicle of change, through innovation or through improvement.  Without competition, the consumers will have highly priced products, and it is impossible for them to enjoy impeccable service. Without competition, the firms may not provide consumers with high quality products or best service.
   b．Competition in many industries has become worldwide in scope, and the pace of innovation in products and services has accelerated.  This has been good news for consumers, since intensified competition has generally led to lower prices, higher quality, and more choices.
   c．Modern competition appears in many forms: price, credit terms, service, product improvement, inter-industry struggles concerning substitution and replacement, innovations as to method, and so fourth. Basically, it is rivalry for consumer patronage.
   d．If a truly free competitive economy is the desired goal of a nation, the continued existence of independent enterprises is imperative. Competitive capitalism insures freedom of enterprise and provides an outlet for individual creative impulses and abilities, as well as a livelihood for a large segment of the population. It is the best insurance that our economy will remain dynamic and provide a continuous stream of innovations, new ideas, experiments, and pioneering efforts.
   e．Competition is also important for small firms. In competing with large concerns, however, the small firm has at least two important factors working to its advantage: one is closer contract with customers and employees, and the other is flexibility in production, marketing, and service. You need to know your competition.
