In this part of the test you are given a discussion topic. You have 30 seconds to look at the prompt card, an ex ample of which is below, and then about 3 minutes to discuss the topic with your partner. After that the examiner will ask you more questions related to the topic.

A: In international trade, buyers and sellers usually live far from each other and this creates a problem. It is impossible for the buyers to examine the quality of the imported goods. Thus there needs to be some means for the sellers to inform the buyers of the quality. In international trade, four means are generally used to express the quality of products. They are sales by sample, sales by specification, grade or standard, sales by trade mark or brand, and sales by description.
B: Yes, a sample is a small quantity of the products which represents the whole. Through the sample, buyers are able to know the quality of the products.
A: Ok, sales by specification, grade or standard are another way to show the quality of the products, namely through certain recognized specification, grades or standards.
B: Sales by trademark or brand are normally useful to the products that have already obtained export markets whose brands or trade marks are already widely known.
A: The last method is sales by description. Sales by description are usually applied to some whole set of mechanical and electrical products such as instruments or equipment. For these products there must be detailed descriptions provided for the buyers so that the buyers are able to know the structure, function, usage of the products, and so the products can be used accordingly.
B: In export trade, sales contract plays an important part. A quality clause is always a major part in the contract, which the exporters should also pay great attention to, when working it out, so as to make it really workable.

B: Well, it depends. It depends on buyer’s preference, and the kind of goods. For example, instruments or equipment usually use sales by discription.
