Information Technology: a Mixed Blessing
In the 21st century, the human race has entered the age of information technology. As a kind of technology, it has dramatically affected people and organizations on a wide scale. Besides its many uses in commerce, office work, and manufacturing, it has also improved health care, provided new ways to shop, enabled professional and social encounters across the globe, and permeated the thousands of things we do in the course of our daily life. It has improved education and training as well. Human organizations from small companies to entire national governments have benefited a great deal from it because so much of the work they do is information work.
But information technology is a double-edged sword. Its wide use has already resulted in a polarized world. For example, developed countries like the United States have mastered advanced information technology, they have produced many high-quality hardware and software tools underdeveloped countries have to import, causing a gap between themselves and underdeveloped countries. As far as division of labor is concerned, those who have mastered information technology have more chances to do well-paid work than those who have not mastered information technology, causing a polarized society. Worst of all, having mastered information technology, such evil people as hackers and data thieves break into or destroy others’ computer systems.
In view of the duality of information technology, we should let it play its best role in our life and work and prevent it from being misused by high-tech criminals.
