答案
★Work
— I work.
— I work as a computer programmer, here in Shanghai.
— My main responsibility is to ensure that all the computer prograrmmes in the office are running correctly. I often have to write short, new programmes that do exactly what we need and I also have to correct any programmes that go wrong.
— I would like to continue doing this kind of job. It’s something that I’ve been interested in for many years and I think I’m pretty good at it. However, the company that 1 work for doesn’t offer many opportunities for further training, so I’d like to get a job with another company.
— Actually, I work alone. I help my colleagues from other departments whenever they need me. If I’m not busy, I take a wall around the different departments and check that everything is OK.
— Yes, we often go out somewhere for dinner, particularly if a big project has just been finished. Some of my colleagues then go on to sing karaoke, but I make my excuses and go home at that point.
★Family
— I live with my wife and daughter in a flat fairly near the city centre. My wife works for a state-owned company and she gets this flat at a reduced rent. We’re saving to buy our own flat in the future, since my wife would prefer to work for a private company or perhaps even start her own business. If she did this, we would not be able to keep our current flat.
— My wife is an accountant. Her job is to check that certain departments keep within their budgets. To be honest, I don’t know much about her work accounting isn’t of interest to me.
— We eat together. My wife and I agree that it is important to do this. We sometimes watch TV together, if there’s something we all like. At the weekends, we often get in the car and go out into the countryside or we go to one of the parks near our home. My daughter likes playing with a Frisbee, but sometimes she throws it in the wrong direction!
— My wife does most of the housework, but I help out by doing the ironing and cleaning the floor. My wife does most of the cooking, but I help by cutting up the vegetables and meat. My wife does the washing. She says I don’t do it properly.
★Festivals
— Sure. I’m sure you’re familiar with the main Chinese festivals we celebrate, like the Spring Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, Workers’ Day, National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival. We celebrate in much the same way as other Chinese people by having a meal. At Spring Festival, our daughter gets spoilt because there are so many adults in our extended family and she is the only child at the moment.
— Spring Festival marks the beginning of the Chinese year. As you probably know, each year is represented by one of twelve animals. Workers’ Day is a traditional socialist holiday that honours workers, bit I’m pretty sure it was first celebrated in America--certainly not in China. National Day celebrates the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 after the Nationalists were defeated and fled to Taiwan. Tomb Sweeping Day is when people remember their ancestors and visit their tombs or shrines.
— No, there are none that I can think of. However, there are many annual exhibitions that are extremely popular.
— I don’t think there’s a lot that people do that is really special. There are the ’red envelopes’ for children at Chinese New Year and there are fireworks of course. In Shanghai, there are very good official fire- works displays. It’s much safer than allowing people to light fireworks in the streets.
— Apart from New Year, I like to surprise my wife on Valentine’s Day. I get either my parents or her parents to baby-sit and take her to a really classy restaurant. She always protests that it’s a waste of money, but I think she likes it really.
