- Do you have a large family or a small family?
In a sense, both. I have a large family because I keep close contact with my relatives, especially my grandparents and uncles. But I live with my parents, which is what people call a ’nuclear family’.
- Can you tell me something about them?
Sure. My father works in a company and my mother in a hospital. Like many of my peers, I am the only child in the family, so they really care about everything of me. This bothered me when I was a teenager but now I began to understand that this is their way of loving me.
- How much time do you manage to spend with members of your family?
Now I am studying in university so I only spend time with my family during the summer holiday and winter holiday. I spend most of my time with my parents but do join in family reunions during festivals and holidays.
- What sorts of things do you like to do together?
Well, when we get together, a heavy dinner is unavoidable, as you know, Chinese people attach great importance to Dining... besides dinner, I’ll do sports or chat a lot with my cousins.

- What sports are most popular in your country?
I think it is an increasing awareness of doing sports in China, especially among senior citizens. I think ’plaza dance’ is the most popular. It is kind of a sporty dance that is invented only for exercise instead of aesthetic appreciation... It went crazy like virus in the past years, and you can find people dancing ’plaza dance’ in every city in China!
- What sports and games did you most enjoy playing when you were a child?
When I was a child, we didn’t have advanced electronic devices so the games we played were really ’brick and mortar’ games. I liked jumping the rope and hide and seek the most.
- Do people take as much exercise as in the past?
Well, it’s hard to say. It is obvious that people do not have as many opportunities to exercise as in the past. To name one example, people are taking buses, metro or drive to work instead of walking or riding a bicycle. But people nowadays do have an awareness of doing sports, as you see, marathon is a hit in many cities in China.
- Why is exercise good for you?
I started exercise regularly two years ago. It is good for me for two reasons, firstly it gives me good health and physical shape; secondly it is an important way of balancing all the pressures in life.
