It remained at this level in 1981 before rapidly increasing in value to 1.8 dollars per pound in 1982 and then to 1.5 dollars per pound in 1983. The dollar continued to appreciate in value at a more gradual pace until it stood at 1.2 dollars per pound in 1985, its highest rate over the period 1973 to 1988. Thereafter, the dollar depreciated quickly to 1.6 dollars to the pound in 1986, it remained at this rate in 1987 before declining further to 2 dollars to the pound in 1988.
