    The "greenhouse effect" is a term used to describe the phenomenon that an increasing amount of carbon dioxide is produced in the atmosphere because of the warming of the earth. Carbon dioxide is a gas produced when coal, oil or natural gas is burned. This carbon dioxide increases the heat of the atmosphere, and thus warms the earth.
    The effect of "greenhouse effect"
    According to scientists, the "greenhouse effect" is the most serious problem we have ever faced. Firstly, because as the earth grows warmer ocean water expands, the level of the ocean could rise. In addition to melting, polar icecaps could also lead to an increase in the level of the ocean. Thus people might lose their homes, and cities like New Orleans might be completely submerged.
    Some parts of the world might become hotter. Hot weather doesn’t mean that people feel uncomfortable, but means a huge increase in the use of air conditioning which uses energy, creates pollution and costs money.
    Some parts of the world might become much drier. For example, many parts of Africa have suffered from severe droughts. Other parts of the world might become wetter. Thus, too much rain in some regions will destroy crops traditionally grown there, and lead to hunger.
    How to deal with "greenhouse effect"?
    Scientists put forward some suggestions, for example, people need to learn to conserve fuel, because burning fuel is one of the main reasons of the "greenhouse effect".  Governments have to protect forests, since trees can help reduce the "greenhouse effect".  Chemicals which lead to increasing the effect should be banned or strictly controlled. Nations must work together to prevent a global disaster, at the same time; ordinary citizens should also pay attention to protecting the environment and try their best to deal with the "greenhouse effect".
