Nuclear Energy
Some scientists think that nuclear energy should be used. According to them, nuclear energy is nonpolluting, inexhaustible, independent from foreign pressures and it is the safest of all energy resources, because it is most closely watched. The well publicized risks have been greatly exaggerated. It should be remembered that none of the past accidents have killed or even injured one single person. The chance of dying from radiation from a nuclear plant are much smaller than the chances of being the victim of a traffic accident, of drowning, or of dying of cancer caused by smoke from other people’s cigarettes. As for the danger of accidents, it is extremely small: reactors are built to resist earthquakes much stronger than any earthquake ever known to man, and their operations are automatically stopped at the slightest shaking.
Jane Hi, Tom. Long time no see, how are you doing?
Tom Hello, Jane. I have no important things to do really, besides my chemistry paper. You know my chemistry teacher is Mr. Brown, the strict old professor.
Jane So how is your chemistry paper going?
Tom It’s coming along. But I’ve been staring at this computer screen for hours and my eyes hurt.
Jane Yeah. Doing that will make your eyes dry and tired. You should take a break.
Tom I can’t. I have to get this paper written. It’s due the day after tomorrow.
Jane You know, I read about computers and eye problems recently. The article said that they are usually caused by not blinking our eyes enough.
Tom Blinking? I thought I just needed new glasses.
Jane No. When you blink, the movement of closing and opening your eyes, even though it happens really fast, helps moisten your eyes. It’s the lack of moisture that causes the problem.
Tom That makes sense. But what does it have to do with the computer?
Jane People who use computers tend to stare at the monitor and blink less often than they normally would. That leads to dry, irritated eyes.
Tom Well, that’s certainly how mine feel now. They really hurt.
Jane The article I read about office workers found that the workers averaged 22 blinks a minute when relaxed. But just 7 a minute while looking at the text on a computer screen.
Tom Wow. That’s quite a difference.
lane They also kept their eyes open wider which means the moisture evaporated more quickly.
Tom I wonder if using some kind of eye-drops will make them feel better.
Jane That might help. But the best prescription is to take a break and rest your eyes.
Tom OK. Let’s go and get some coffee. I can finish this later tonight.

The professor doesn’t think nuclear energy should be used. He thinks that reactors are much too dangerous to be used at all. Some situations such as earthquake, fire, a mechanical failure or a simple human error might cause a release of radiation and that might do damage to the people all around the area. Even though there are no dangers, the professor thinks nuclear energy may affect the environment. Hot waste may do damage to the water of rivers and lakes or destroy plants and fish. The professor also points out that if terrorists capture a reactor or steal some uranium, people could do nothing to save themselves or fight with the terrorists. It would be a big disaster or perhaps the end of the world for people.
All in all, in the professor’s opinion, nuclear energy has two disadvantages. First of all, there are potential problems to the environment, human beings and other living creatures; secondly, it is dangerous to control and operate a nuclear energy system.
