问题    You will now listen to part of a lecture. You will then be asked a question about it. After you hear the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Question: Using points and examples from the talk, explain plants’ selective breeding.
Today, let’s talk about selective breeding. In order to improve the quantity and quality of crops, ancient farmers kept crop seeds that had desirable characteristics to breed. Smart, isn’t it? Time after time, the seed’s quality was improved.
Let’s take wheat as an example. When wheat first ripens, the grain easily falls down on the ground and makes it really difficult for farmers to gather. However, there is other wheat which doesn’t fall off and makes it easy to gather. Farmers chose to keep the seeds of the breeds that don’t easily drop the grain. After many years, none of the wheat falls to the ground and this facilitates the gathering of the grain. Another example is the pea plant. Originally, pea plants had very small peas which were not large enough to feed people. Later, farmers chose the seeds from the plants that had larger peas to breed. Finally, the peas got much bigger and could be used as food for people.

答案 The professor talks about two examples of selective breeding. It is a method that farmers use to improve the agricultural products’ quantity and quality by choosing seeds from the plants with desirable characteristics to breed.
The first example is wheat. In the past, wheat grains easily fell down on the ground after they matured. So, it was difficult to gather. Later, famers chose seeds from wheat plants that didn’t quickly drop their grain to breed. After many years, none of the wheat grains fall to the ground and this facilitates the gathering of the grain. This grain has become a major agricultural product.
The other example is the pea plant. The pea plants’ seeds were too small to provide enough food for people. Farmers chose the seeds from the plants with larger seeds to breed. The result is growing larger peas which can serve as food for people.
