You will now read a short passage and then listen to a talk on the same academic topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Scarcity
In business, scarcity is closely related to how price is determined and it plays a key factor in a good number of purchase decisions. If demand for a product is significant, price will naturally be higher. In addition, however, the belief or perception that a product is scarce tends to make it desirable. Human beings are competitive, thus the fact that one’s neighbor might not be able to enjoy the same goods as oneself often acts as a lever prompting a purchase. Related to this is the mesmerizing effect worked by perceived discounts. If a discount is promised, customers tend to assume the goods in question are normally expensive and, as such, exclusive. Hence, a small discount or a bump upwards in price followed by a "discount" back to the ordinary price can go far towards increasing sales of even common goods.
Now hear a talk on the same subject.
Question: Using the information from the reading and the lecture, explain how scarcity can help boost sales of products.
OK, I think we’ve all experienced the so-called "scarcity phenomenon." Let’s take an everyday example here. Say a shop is selling jackets. Maybe they have a slow-moving style of jacket, that means the jackets aren’t selling well. So the shop runs advertisements and tells the public that the supply of the jacket is limited. Or they insist that the discount is being offered this weekend only. The simple fact that customers believe there are relatively few jackets, or that the discount will end soon will actually help the shop increase sales. In other words, customers will purchase the jacket if they are told that the jackets will all be gone if not purchased immediately, or if told there is a discount this weekend only.

答案
The lecture is about a concept called scarcity. And the professor in the lecture explains this concept by giving an example of a shop selling ordinary jackets.
According to the lecture, a shop sells jackets: however, the products don’t sell well. In order to increase the sales, the shop claims that the jackets are limited and will soon become scarce if people do not make purchase immediately. Or the shop can offer a discount for a short time. Both tactics will draw people’s attention to the jacket and spur their desire to make purchase. The reason is that customers tend to be interested in the products that are scarce or pay attention to discount. As the professor admits at the end, such tactics will make people compete with others in order to obtain goods that in themselves are limited or economical. And the products will experience good sales.
