" Brave words from Jim Cantalupo, chairman and chief executive of McDonald’s for the previous 100 days, who promised investors at a Wall Street meeting on April 7 that the world’s biggest fast-food chain no longer wanted to be bigger than everybody else, just better.

The teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) is an area in which Australia is internationally recognized to have developed considerable and particular expertise. So, too, in the teaching of the teachers, Australia has a strong reputation for the high quality of its pre-service and in-service training of English language teachers. My department, and particularly a subsidiary within it, Australian Education International, share a conviction that this expertise is of value to our overseas colleagues, many of whom have responsibility for developing TESOL in their own countries.
