Passage 1
Although successful people and failures both agree that luck and connections are the main ingredients of success, they view these factors differently. Those people who fail say that they were prevented from succeeding by uncontrollable forces. They view luck as a throw of the dice, as an almost magical force. They believe that connections are an accident of birth. But that’s not the case for successful people, who attribute their accomplishments to their own talent and effort. They are persistent and diligent. They see luck in terms of timing, of taking advantage of opportunities as they arise. To them connections are not really a birthright. And they accept responsibility for controlling their own lives.
Passage 2
According to a panel of scientists working for the WHO, climate change affects the fundamental requirements for health: clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter. Extreme high air temperatures contribute directly to deaths from cardiovascular and respiratory disease, particularly among elderly people. In the heat wave of summer 2010 in Europe, for example, more than 70,000 excess deaths were recorded. High temperatures also raise the levels of ozone and other pollutants in the air that exacerbate cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Urban air pollution causes about 1.2 million deaths every year. Globally, the number of reported weather-related natural disasters has more than tripled since the 1960s.
