Say No to Campus Smoking
Nowadays, smoking has become a serious social problem. We can find smokers everywhere. And we should pay special attention to the fact that among all those 320 million smokers in China, 5 million go to school. Their average age is 14 and a half. Every. day about 80,000 children start smoking. Those young smokers find various excuses for themselves but in my opinion, we should say no to this habit.
On one hand, it does great harm to our health. According to the statistics of 2002, more than half of all those smokers die of lung cancer and almost all of them have some diseases related to their respiratory system. The latest research also indicated that smoking does much more damage to young people. For women, especially those expecting ones, smoking will definitely ruin the health of their future babies. Here we should never forget the voice of those non-smokers. They are the group to which our sympathy should go. Under the same roof, although they do not smoke, they suffer the same as those heavy smokers.
Another fact is that smoking also involves young people in crime. Over 95 percent of teenage criminals get into crime because of smoking, and almost all those crimes come from the need for money to buy cigarettes. When they cannot get enough money, they will resort to crime. The recent survey of the Shanghai Association of Smoking and Health also proved this.
From above we can see that smoking has left a serious problem to the society. Time is pressing and we should take every measure to tackle this problem. In many foreign countries, the citizens under 18 cannot buy alcohol or cigarettes. Young consumers have to show their identity cards in shops. In China, similar regulations are not carried out seriously. A national law passed in 1999 forbids selling alcohol or cigarettes to teens, but the law is ignored for the lack of specific punishment. Lately, authorities in some big cities have made several laws and regulations on this. For example, high school students’ parties in Shanghai will be cigarette free zones. The municipal congress has passed a law to make shops display warnings not to sell cigarettes to those under 18, or they will have to face a penalty of 500 yuan. Practices have shown that this is an effective way to keep us away from cigarettes.
All in all, smoking in young students should be forbidden immediately. Let us say no to the campus smoking.
