   Different people pursue different life styles. Some aim at a prosperous life which features a high salary and being able to afford the good things in life. Others prefer a life completely centered on their families. For all the temptation of the good living conditions and the natural pleasures of family life, I still prefer an important life, that is, a life of achievement which brings me respect and recognition.
   Abraham Maslow developed a famous theory of human needs, according to which our needs are arranged in a hierarchy. Physiological seeds for air, water, food, etc. arc primary for human beings, and then upward come in turn safety needs, social needs, esteem and self-actualization needs. Lying at the top of the pyramid, esteem and self-actualization needs arc regarded as higher levels of pursuit. For us people living in modern civilization, when those basic needs are met, we should develop further to realize our potentials and win others’ respect and recognition. This is what an important life calls for.
   Besides, an important life can bring us great pleasure and satisfaction. After setting a goal before us, we are dedicated and make sustained efforts for its attainment. As we struggle with all kinds of difficulties, our potentials are gradually discovered and fulfilled. Then the final success will reward us with an enormous sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Others’ approval and admiration serve as a great source of our confidence to go ahead. This moment is really wonderful and unforgettable for everyone sharing this experience. Before it, money’s charm pales into insignificance and the sensory pleasures seem so vulgar and transient.
   What is more, when a person has accomplished a lot in his career, his value and worth will be recognized and appreciated by society, so he is very likely to enjoy an affluent life too. Often, an important life is also conducive to a happy family life, because he has financial means to take good care of his loved ones and create a harmonious atmosphere from which every family member can benefit.
   Different personal values lead to different pursuits of life.  In my opinion, in achievement and self actualization lies the essence of life, and society’s recognition and respect are most valuable for us. An important life remains a sustained source of motivations to push individuals towards self-development and perfection.
