问题     Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Sometimes it is better not to tell the truth. Write an essay of about 400 words to state your view.
   In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary.
   You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.
   Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

答案                     Truth Is the Best Policy
   We have often heard the phrase, "Sometimes it is better not to tell the truth." Usually the reasons given are not wishing to hurt the other person’s feelings, or wanting to spare that person the emotional trauma and anguish from tragic or sad news. In other words, not telling the truth is often seen as being "humanitarian". While there is some validity to this point of view and it is tempting to agree, in the end I still feel that "truth is the best policy."
   Have you heard the phrase, "It’s not what you say, but how say it"? When we have something very sad or tragic to relate to someone, often we can cushion the impact by how we say it, by being empathetic and showing we care. By telling someone the truth, even if hurtful or sad, we are letting the person know we feel he is mature enough to deal with it. Additionally, we are allowing the person the freedom and choice to respond or react as he chooses, rather than shielding him from this responsibility. For example, a terminally ill patient’s family chooses not to tell the person the Doctor said he or she only has a limited amount of time to live. They of course think they are doing the loving, caring thing, when in fact, the patient should have the right to know and the opportunity to be mentally and emotionally prepared.
   The other reason why I think it is always better to tell the truth is that oftentimes I think the other person knows, deep down in their heart, or in their "gut", the truth anyway, and suspects you are not telling him the truth. He may wonder why you are not being straight with him, why you are not "leveling" with him and this can negatively affect your relationship. If you are "living with a lie", this can cause self-inflicted pressure and guilt on yourself, negatively affecting your own health.
   In summary, I believe it is better to tell the truth, at all times. Sometimes we need to so do tactfully, gently and with great caring, to alleviate the shock or grief, if it is tragic or sad news. We need to let the recipient be the one to decide how he or she wishes to respond, to react, to the truth. Also, often the recipient will know, deep down, if you are "hiding the truth" and this can negatively affect the relationship.
