Thailand’s deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has vowed to return to the country if authorities attack his supporters. Speaking by telephone from abroad, the former leader addressed thousands of supporters gathered in Bangkok Sunday after Thailand’s current leader Abhisit Vejjajiva threatened to use force to stop anti-government protest. Mr. Thaksin said he is closely monitoring the situation and will return to Thailand if violence escalates. Mr. Abhisit declared a state of emergency Sunday after demonstrators forced the government to cancel an ASEAN summit and evacuate leaders by helicopter Saturday. Emergency measures have done little to stop the demonstrators.
