The four remaining Republican presidential contenders sparred in a debate in South Carolina on Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s primary election in the state. Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum argued over jobs, healthcare and leadership. Gingrich turned angry when a reporter questioned him about allegations by his ex-wife that he had asked for an open marriage to accommodate an extramarital affair. Romney defended himself from accusations that he cut jobs when he headed an investment firm that bought other companies. Santorum and Romney criticized Paul for his plans to cut military spending. All the candidates criticized President Barack Obama’s healthcare plan and called for a crackdown on illegal immigration.
