M: Well, San Francisco has a lot of different ethnic groups, so you might think you are seeing a lot of tourists.
W: What are the different ethnic groups?
M: Well, let’s see. (1) After whites, the largest one is Asians, then African-Americans.
W: I see.
M: In fact, San Francisco has the largest Chinese community outside of Asia.
W: Do most of the Chinese people live in Chinatown?
M: Well, (2)it’s true that Chinatown is the center of Chinese culture here, but they live all over the city.
W: Do most American cities have so many different ethnic groups?
M: Well, the large ones do—Los Angeles, New York, Chicago. But maybe the different ethnic groups are more visible in San Francisco because the city is so small.
