United Nations is calling for urgent action to ease the global food crisis that officials say is threatening to spread conflict, poverty and starvation to tens of millions of people across the developing world. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged world leaders to boost food output by 50% over the next 20 years. The UN chief described to summit delegates a Sub-Saharan Africa that is suffering from severe food shortages and recent food rioting. He also said food shortages in Afghanistan, Haiti, Nigeria and elsewhere threatened to ease economic and political gains made with UN help.
