                  Experts Propose Chinese Mother’s Day
   Cultural experts have suggested setting up a Chinese equivalent of Mother’s Day, during a forum in eastern China’s Shandong Province.
   Academics with the Chinese Academy of Mencius (CAM) proposed setting April 2 on the Chinese lunar calendar as Chinese Mother’s Day at the forum that started Tuesday in Shandong’s Zoucheng City, hometown of Mencius.
   Mencius (372 - 289 BC) was a pupil of Confucius’ grandson, and travelled his life teaching Confucianism. Both Mencius and Confucius are ancient Chinese philosophers.
   Mencius’ mother is regarded as one of the four great mothers in ancient China, and is seen as a symbol of Chinese mothers, known for her kindness, simplicity, diligence and strong will.
   Li Cunshan, CAM special deputy dean, said that more than 80 countries in the world had a Mother’s Day, while China did not.
   "Many Chinese people show their affection to their mothers on the second Sunday of May, or Mother’s Day that is originally celebrated in the United States," Li said. "We do expect to have our own Mother’s Day. "
   Li said that filial piety was a core concept in Chinese culture, and that it was Chinese people’s aspiration to show piety to their mothers on the special day.
   Experts at the forum said that the achievements of Mencius were greatly influenced by his mother, and that China should set up a Chinese Mother’s Day and make it a public holiday.

   Recently, the news that experts called for setting up a Chinese Mother’s Day has aroused considerable public concern. Supporters argue that setting up a Chinese Mother’s Day can not only help us show our affection to mothers, but also carry on the Chinese virtue of filial piety. In my opinion, China should have its own Mother’s Day for the following reasons.
   To begin with, the celebration of our own Mother’s Day sends a clear message that we appreciate the remarkable contributions made by mothers. It is selfless mothers who not only nourish us but also guide us through our arduous growth. Hence, it is natural for our nation to publicly honour them by designating a national holiday instead of borrowing it from the US. Furthermore, by making Mother’s Day a ritual, we attach to this special occasion greater importance of cherishing our traditional assets. This is especially important in China whose flourishing economic development stuns the world but whose core values are being eroded by vulgar materialism. So a Chinese Mother’s Day is more a reassertion of our traditional values we still cherish today than a ceremony.
   In conclusion, setting up a Chinese Mother’s Day has both the merits of inspiring love between mothers and children and promoting traditional Chinese culture. Therefore, China should take it without any hesitation in bringing forward this national holiday.
