答案                         A Growing Number of Chinese Papers in SCI
    As is shown in the chart, the number of Chinese science and technology papers published in SCI journals has been on the rise. The proportion of Chinese papers against the world total has generally been increased, except for two minor dips in the years of 2005 and 2008. But the world ranking of the number of Chinese papers has been going up, from 8th in 2001 to 2nd in 2009, and remained in 2nd up to 2011.
    The impressive research output in science and technology in China, represented by the papers published in SCI journals, might be attributed to the following reasons. First, more research funds have been granted to researchers in universities and institutes. Second, more and more postgraduate students with Ph.D. degrees have graduated. They become assistants, participants or even chief researchers of many national-level research projects, contributing to publishing more papers.
    Given this trend and the government’s increasing input in scientific endeavors, I believe that the number and proportion of Chinese papers published in SCI journals will continue to increase for the next few years.
