The United Nations top diplomat in Afghanistan is calling for peace talks with the Taliban’s top leaders. Kai Eide spoke to reporters in Kabul. He said only talks with top Taliban leaders could end the country’s conflicts. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has repeatedly called for peace talks with the Taliban. Taliban leader, Mullah Omar has rejected the offer. The Taliban leader says no talks can take place as long as the American-led coalition forces remained in Afghanistan.

Newspapers in Iran say President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is urging girls to marry at the age of 16. He says he wants to change what he considers the immoral Western influence causing Iranian girls to marry at a later age. Newspapers say Mr. Ahmadinejad reported the average age at marriage in Iran of 24 years for girls and 26 for boys. The Iranian president also criticized Iran’s family planning programs. Those programs worked to slow a high population growth rate.
