People typically find unemployment a painful experience. It may result from the inability to find a first job, layoffs, dismissed because of poor job performance, or even quitting a job voluntarily.【F1】
Researchers find that unemployment has adverse effects on physical and mental health
.
Many people pass through several stages in reacting to their unemployment. At first they undergo a sequence of shock, relief, and relaxation. In many cases they had anticipated that they were about to lose their jobs, so when the dismissal comes, they may feel a sense of relief that at last the suspense is over. On the whole they remain confident and hopeful that they will find a new job when they are ready. During this time, they maintain normal relationships with their family and friends. The first stage lasts for about a month or two. The second stage centers on a concerted effort to find a new job. If workers have been upset or angry about losing their jobs, the feeling tends to evaporate as they try hard to land a new job. This stage may last for up to four months. But if another job is not found during this time, people move into the third stage, which lasts about 6 weeks.【F2】
Their self-esteem begins to crumble, and they experience high levels of self-doubt and anxiety.
The fourth stage finds unemployed workers drifting into a state of resignation and withdrawal. They become exceedingly discouraged and convinced that they are not going to find work. They either stop looking for work or search for it only half-heatedly and intermittently. Some come through the stage and look back on it as a "cleansing" experience. They may make a conscious decision to change careers or to settle for some other line of work. And they may look for other sources of self-esteem, including families, friends, and hobbies. [br] ______is not mentioned as a factor leading to joblessness.
