India’s Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is appealing for calm after a mob in the state of Gujarat burned a train carrying Hindu activists. The attackers were said to be Muslems. The attack killed 57 people. Officials have ordered a curfew in the town of Godhra where the attack happened. The train carried members of a Hindu nationalist group from a gathering in the northern town of Ayodhya. Local officials say the Hindus were shouting statements that angered Muslems in Godhra. The Hindu group wants to build a holy place in Ayodhya on the ruins of an ancient mosque. Hindus destroyed the Islamic center 10 years ago.
