Some land management agencies, such as the National Parks Service, require that backpackers register and obtain permits (called backcountry reservations) before entering wilderness areas. Others simply require that backpackers set up their campsite away from the trail and at least 30 meters from lakes, rivers, and streams to avoid polluting sources of drinking water.
