Dear Editor,
    I was absolutely appalled by the senseless death of Tom Granger. It is quite impossible to believe that people are allowed to risk their lives like this.
    Personally, I think that people should want to be safe and protected from danger. They should not find dangerous activities thrilling and exciting. Equally, this club should not attract weak and vulnerable young people, who believe they must do something totally outrageous to impress people and win respect. This club has no value, either for the members or for the society. In fact, it puts a value on the most negative thing of all—possible death. If I saw a vulnerable and unbalanced person playing with a gun, I would take it away from him. Similarly when we see people are about to hurt themselves, we must stop them.
    In addition, there is something childish, too, about the desire to traverse official boundaries. Canoeing where you aren’t supposed to be canoeing, jumping where you’re not supposed to jump involves the guilty freedom of a child breaking the rules. Paradoxically, an obsession with breaking rules actually leaves you beholden to them.
    The University should stop the Extreme Sports Club and the government should ban extreme sports throughout the country.
