    Nowadays we’ll not be surprised if we fail to find any Chinese characters on the package of the products. So many products are for domestic sale, yet the instructions are given in English. Some foreigners may take it for granted that all the Chinese people understand English, or that English has become an official language of China.
    However, that’s not the case. Therefore it is necessary for the producers to supply us with the Chinese instructions, because they aim at such a huge domestic market. During the Spring Festival, many children bought plenty of firecrackers. I know children who do not know a word of English, nor do their parents. How could they fortify themselves against possible danger since they can not read the warning given in English? It sounds so ridiculous since a huge market of firecrackers xists in China. When the producers are so considerate as to print the instructions in English for people in other countries, they seem to neglect the need of their own countrymen.
    The avoidance of the Chinese characters is not, a matter of the preference for language, but a matter of dignity. It’s ridiculous that so many producers choose to avoid their mother tongue even when they aim at the domestic market. What’s more, the English instructions are crammed with all kinds of silly mistakes. Foreigners view it a joke, whereas so many Chinese view it their noble task. It’s so disgraceful and despicable. It’s high time that the Chinese people paid more attention to their own dignity and their own need.
