W: Hi, Frank. I have a question. When people speak of sports, they always mention the Olympic Games. Where did the Games come from?
M: Well, it is said that the Games came from a sports festival between some powerful city states of ancient Greece, and the festival was held first to worship one of their gods, Zeus,[19]and later on as a peace settlement between these states.
W: I see. Do you know when and where the first Games were held?
M: In the City of Olympia in 776 B. C.
W: How often were the Games held?
M: Once every four years.
W: That was the same as they are nowadays. Mm, what sports were in the first Games?
M: At first running was the only sport, but later other sports were added, such as boxing, discus, and wrestling.[20]The ancient Games continued until 393 AD and lasted for 1,170 years.
W: How did we have the Olympic Games again?
M: In 1894 a Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin proposed to a group of international sports leaders that the old Games be organized again as a means of promoting world peace. And his idea was warmly received and two years later the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens.
W: And it has become a big event today, hasn’t it?
M: Well, in a way. Today the Olympic Games have grown into a truly global affair. People in every country welcome the event warmly. And to your British people, the most exciting thing is the Olympics in London in 2012, for which London has done a lot.
W: Yeah, just imagine we are going to watch the biggest sports event at home!
