    It seems that in recent years, dialectal TV programs are emerging in various forms, such as news and talk shows, and they are gaining popularity among audiences, both the retired people and teenagers. However, the phenomenon has aroused much controversy.
    Some experts hold that these programs are helpful in preserving local languages, which are an indispensable part and a precious legacy of Chinese culture and human civilization. Nevertheless, some authorities argue that the thriving dialectal programs go against our national policy of promoting Mandarin. They stress, furthermore, that these programs will exert a negative influence on students’ use of Mandarin.
    In my view, these programs are not completely devoid of any merit. For one thing, news is broadcast in an entertaining way. Thus, the audience gain both information and pleasure, and they feel relieved from everyday pressure. For another, when it comes to some relaxing programs that center around people’s daily life, it is advisable to present them in a certain dialect, for by so doing, the programs can appear more amusing and attractive to the audience. To sum up, I sec no threat they pose against Mandarin and no reason why they should be banned.
