During the Ming Dynasty, the outer city was built and the population increased sharply, driving the further development of commerce. In order to strengthen public security, fences were put around the entrance of many hutongs then. It was especially necessary to strengthen security measures in Langfangsitiao Street due to its many shops and stores; therefore, many tall and firm fences were put here, from which the name Dashilar was derived. After hundreds of years of development, Dashilar Business Street has become an area boasting the most prosperous commerce in Beijing and many of Beijing’s time-honored businesses are located here.
