College brochures often depict fresh-faced, newly-minted high school graduates, ready to venture out of their parents’ homes to their dorm rooms for the first time. The problem with that picture is those students—the 18- to 22-year-old "traditional" college students—are no longer the norm. In fact, most students who used to be classified as nontraditional—older students, those with families and jobs, as well as veterans—are now more common on college campuses. The reality, says Andrew Kelly of the American Enterprise Institute in a documentary, is that many students don’t move straight from high school to college and complete their degrees within four to six years. Some join the military, start working, start a family or simply take more time to figure out what path they want to pursue. However, the way for the older students is not easy. At community colleges where many adult students begin their college careers, 1 in 10 transfer students lose nearly all of their course credits upon transferring to a four-year university. That’s why some education reformers are advocating for an alternative approach to a degree through online education, competency-based education and more flexible credit transferring policies. The need to play multiple roles at once as a parent, a spouse, an employee and a student, has fueled the growth of online education. About a third of college students have taken at least one online class, and both employers and the general public are increasingly supportive of online education.
