    Currently, a growing number of old people are living by themselves since their children study or work away from home, which leads to the phenomenon of empty nest. It is reported that the past five years have witnessed a sharp increase in the percentage of the empty-nest elderly from 7. 5% to 23.9%.
    To account for this phenomenon, people have come up with various reasons. To start with, due to the fierce competition and globalization, many young people have to pursue their career far away from home. What’s more, the improvement of economy makes it possible for a family to have more than one apartment. Therefore, the young and the old usually live separately.
    To solve this problem, in my opinion, there are several approaches. First, the government and community should establish clubs to draw the attention of the elderly and encourage them to cultivate their own hobbies. In addition, the young should always bear in mind that it’s their duty to extend their love and care to their parents. Thanks to the joint efforts, I believe that the elderly will live a happier life than ever.
