    Many kinds of sounds can be found on recordings in sound effects libraries. These recordings include sounds such as thunder, foghorns, barking dogs, creaking doors, splashing water, machinery, and so on. But if special or unusual sounds are needed, the sound effects editor must find or create them so they can be recorded and used in the film.
    Creating sound effects was once a very important part of another type of entertainment—radio. In the 1930s and 40s, people could listen to mysteries, comedies, westerns, soap operas, and other kinds of exciting shows on the radio. Since there were no pictures to look at, stories were told in terms of sounds. These sounds included not only the voices of the actors, but also background music and sound effects.
    At a radio recording studio, the sound effects person was set up in a special room with all sorts of props that were used to create sounds. When the sound of rain was needed, the sound effects person might throw dry rice into a metal pail or spray water into a bucket. Crinkling cellophane near the microphone produced the sound of a fire or frying food. And rhythmically clapping coconut shell halves on a table top produced the sound of a galloping horse. The sound effects person also had doors to slam, doorbells to ring, stairs to climb, typewriter to tap, whistles to blow, and guns with blank bullets to shoot. There was virtually no sound the sound effects person could not create to add a realistic feeling to a radio show.
