Britain’s employers are【B1】______filling job vacancies from the ranks of the longterm sick, people beyond normal【B2】______age and migrant workers. Official figures show that the numbers claiming in capacity benefit for longterm sickness dropped by 55,000 in tile latest three months and by 104,000 over the past year.
There has also been a rib of 95,000 in the past year in the number of men aged over 65 and women over 60 in jobs. Research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) shows that organizations have stepped up their【B4】______of older workers and immigrants to fill vacancies.
The CIPD’s【B5】______recruitment and retention survey【B6】______that 70% of employers am looking to recruit over55s, while 31% are actively hiring people who am already of pensionable age. Nearly a third, 27%, am seeking out migrant workers.
Its research also shows that 84% of employers who have recruited from among the longterm sick report that their experience has been at least as good as for other workers. A【B7】______of organizations, 18%, said they were【B8】______to take on workers who had mentalhealth problems.【B9】______the longterm sick and immigrants helps explain the puzzle of Britain’s jobless figures.
Official statistics last week showed that the wider measure of unemployment rose by 77,000 to 1.6m in the latest three months, while the narrower claimant count continued its long rise, climbing by 5,800 to 950,900, on course for 1m.
