    As is clearly shown in the chart, adults from different age groups continue education in increasing numbers. Take the 40 ～ 55 age bracket for an example. The percentage of adults who continue education in 1984 is only 2% while in 2004, it rises sharply to 75%, which is over 30 times that of twenty years ago.
    There are a number of reasons why adults spend increasingly more time to continue their education. Some people are doing it to acquire another degree or diploma so that they can have more opportunities for better jobs and quicker promotion. Other people, especially those who are laid off have to come back to school to do vocational retraining, preparing themselves for a new return to the job market. Another noteworthy phenomenon is that even retired or would-ire retired people further education probably because they now have time to fulfill their old dreams or their heart’s desire.
    Out of necessity or out of interest, people go back to school for the common goot—to improve themselves. It is a self-evident fact that this boom in adult education, in turn, helps to raise the intellectual standard of the whole country.
