    Through the changes in the ways of making a living in a family over several generations, the story aims at sounding a warning against man’s wasteful use of natural resources and emphasizing the urgent need to preserve our natural environment.
    For many years environmental pollution has been arousing people’s considerable concern. It is industrial development that is largely responsible for the destruction of the natural resources. The widespread water shortage around the world is just a good case in point. Besides, the use of chemical substances in agriculture also contributes to the environmental pollution. As a result, our air and rivers are being polluted all the time by the dirty and poisonous substances discharged into them.
    Fortunately enough, more and more countries have already recognized the importance of environmental protection and are trying to take effective measures to reverse the present trend. For example, some governments have laid down strict laws so that those who violate will receive their due punishment. Appealing to people to plant trees is another feasible way to improve our natural environment. Anyway, we should keep in mind that if we continued to waste natural resources with no thought for the future, our later generations would end up "selling sand".
