W: This is 20 hours Greenwich meantime. I’m Carol. Thank you for tuning in for this hour’s interview with Mr. Steve McCrery,
the photojournalist for National Geographic. Good evening, Steve. Thanks for coming tonight.
M: Good evening, Carol, and good evening, everybody.
W: Steve, we have got here your new book, South Southeast here. Rather impressive.
M: Thank you.
W: So would you like to say something about it first?
M: This is actually a diary recording more than 20 years of my photojournalism in Asia. As you might have noticed, there are
many pictures in the book taken in the region.
W: Yes. Very appealing pictures you’ve shot there. But why does Asia interest you so much?
M: Because of its rapid transformation. There is always something new, something inspiring for me every time I get there.
W: I see now. I’m still curious about one thing. Photography, to many of us, is always associated with waiting or wasting of
time. Steve, tell me, during all these years, did you ever lose patience at work?
M: No, not really. Good shots are rewarding.
W: Yes, of course. And what else do you think makes a good journalist besides patience?
M: Well, I guess it is courage. I mean the courage to take risks.
W: I see. Like the risk you took in Afghanistan in 1979.
M: I was 50 that year. That was a turning point of my career life.
W: But have you ever been scared with danger or death?
M: Well, that’s another story.
