    The number of people keeping pets has increased dramatically in the past few years in China. Some raise small dogs or cats as their pets while others raise various birds or fishes as their pets. There are still even some people raising snakes and other exotic animals as their pets.
    There are quite a number of reasons for people keeping small animals as pets. One obvious reason is that people’s living standard is greatly improved. They have extra money to buy and raise pets. A more important reason for raising pets is to drive away loneliness for individuals staying home alone, especially for old people and housewives. Besides, pets may bring us a lot of pleasure. Many people simply enjoy watching small animals doing various tricks.
    If I were to choose a pet, what comes to my mind first would be a dog. For one thing, dogs are believed to be the most faithful animals. For another, dogs are very intelligent and they can understand our commands. As some one said, "A man may betray you, but a dog will never."
