But Miss Mitchell, frightened, pulled away from her husband, and ran in the direction the car had veered. She was hit and fell ’unconscious. She died of a skull fracture after five days in critical condition.

He had already been arrested twenty-eight times in the previous ten years for reckless driving. Eight of the arrests had resulted in convictions(定罪).
