Dear Xiaozhang,
    Your letter of December 24 th, in which you said you would apply for admission to our university, arrived as a surprise. I am pretty glad to share with you my idea about your choice of major.
    The Department of Foreign Language of our university has much to recommend it.  For one thing, as is known to all, one’s university training is in large measure a preparation for his future career.  Therefore, the speciality you choose is supposed to help qualify you for job opportunities. Undoubtedly, the English language is an indispensable skill in a world being rapidly globalized. For another, you have always cherished a passion for English. Can it be more satisfying than having a favorite subject as a promising major?
    As to the required qualifications for the enrollment, your sound body and good performance on the College Entrance Examination are a must. Since there will be an interview for those prospective candidates, you might as well spend more time on your spoken English to be better armed.
